Tweed teams wrap up another double
GOLD Coast Tweed Men’s and Women’s District teams have claimed back-to-back BCiB State District Sides Championship trophies at Broadbeach.
Twenty Districts including 560 players from across Queensland converged on the Gold Coast to do battle over four days.
The Gold Coast Tweed Men had an unblemished record of nine straight wins to top the ladder going into the finals series. They then faltered in the second game of finals losing to Brisbane by six shots. In the last round of finals Brisbane were in the
box seat needing to defeat Bundaberg to win the event. In an amazing turn of events, Bundaberg who had two losses earlier in the day, got the jump on Brisbane and ran away to a 20-shot victory. This opened the door for Gold Coast Tweed who defeated Sunshine Coast by 38 shots in the last round to take the title, their sixth in a row.
The women’s team lost to Tropical Far North QLD in round eight but still finished the sectional play on top of the ladder with eight wins. Three strong victories on finals day including a 12-shot win over Tropical Far North secured their fifth straight title.
Due to uneven numbers, Gold Coast Tweed Women fielded a second team who won the Division Two section after finishing fifth in sectional play.
■ Commonwealth Games Vision Impaired gold medallist Jake Fehlberg from Burleigh has won Gold in the B3 Men’s Singles and B3 Mixed Pairs at the Blind Bowlers National Championships in Perth.
Coolangatta’s Peter Uther won Gold in the B3 Open Pairs and B2 Mixed Pairs.
■ The Queensland Athlete with a Disability Team travels to Mackay to play in their National Championships commencing this Sunday.
Locals in the team include Damien Delgado (Tweed Heads), Serena and Tony Bonnell (Broadbeach).
■ Queensland State Championships began yesterday on the Gold Coast with Mixed Pairs.
Post sectional play continues today and finals will be played tomorrow at Club Helensvale. Chloe Stewart won this event last year with Ian Schuback and was looking to join forces with 2017 winner Kurt Brown this year until she was a late withdrawal. Brown will now team up with Julie Keegan.
Men’s and women’s triples start on Thursday with finals on Friday. Stewart also won this event last year with Tweed Heads club mates Jessica Srisamruaybai and Claire Turley. The trio are back again this year.
