Mixed results for Cyclones

Gilmore’s off to a flyer

-

THE Gold Coast Cyclones indoor cricket teams have come away from their Saturday night clashes against the Ipswich Suns with a win and a loss as the women move into third position on the table.

Things were looking shaky early with the Cyclones finding themselves sitting on zero after a string of outs but captain Samantha Courtney and Destiny Williams guided the side to a target of 101.

Lacey Hinze made an immediate impact on her return with 25 runs, combining well with Dolphins first grade debutant Hiruni Liyanarachchi Don for a skin of 34.

The Suns could only score 89 in reply as Hinze took a game-high two wickets. In the men’s match, Ipswich posted 105 before Cyclones pair Dayne Siede and Gary Hinze combined for 27 off the first skin but the side fell well short with a final total of 67.

Next week the Cyclones will travel to take on the one of Australia’s strongest sides in the Wynnum Seagulls. AUSTRALIAN favourites Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons have begun their Bali campaigns with Round 1 wins, as teenage series leader Caroline Marks’ WSL charge continues.

Fitzgibbons paired 7.83 and 6.30 waves for a 14.13 heat total that easily topped yesterday’s efforts and relegated defending event champion Lakey Peterson to second at Keramas.

Defending world champion Gilmore (9.77 points) was more circumspect but just as effective, winning her heat from countrywoman Nikki Van Dyk (6.36) and local hope Kailani Johnson (4.73).

Marks, 17, managed a 12.60 total to beat Coco Ho and Silvana Lima in the opening heat.
