HARBOUR BRIDGE PROTESTERS HUNG UP ON CLIMATE

-

ENVIRONMENTAL activists who abseiled off the Sydney Harbour Bridge to demand action on climate change are expected to be charged.

Police yesterday arrested 13 people after security staff spotted the group on the bridge just after 5am.

Several of them were detained but some managed to lower themselves from the public walkway on the western side of the iconic structure.

They unfurled banners as they dangled beneath the bridge. Police arrested 10 people but three activists remained hanging until they were eventually removed and arrested by 9.30am.

All 13 were taken to local police stations for questioning.

Greenpeace Australia Pacific chief executive David Ritter dismissed questions about the legality of the protest action.

“The activities today are like a smoke alarm when the house is on fire ... it’s a wakeup call to the Prime Minister who is not acting in the face of this climate emergency,” Mr Ritter said.
