Tidal wave forces IRB conclusion

-

DETERIORATING conditions brought Round 3 of SLSQ’s Ocean Roar IRB Series to a premature end at Coolum Beach on Saturday afternoon.

More than 280 lifesavers from across the state’s southeast converged on the Sunshine Coast to contest the high-octane, adrenaline packed inflatable rescue boat (IRB) competition.

Kirra, Miami Beach and defending champions Kurrawa were all in fine form across the morning’s racing, with a series of strong displays in the early heats.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Headland’s open female team also showed they’ll be ones to watch after a dominant performance.

However, while the action was fast and furious this morning, a 1.5m tidal change along with strong winds and dangerous conditions prompted officials to bring competition to an early close about midday in the interests of safety.

SLSQ sport manager Stuart Hogben said it was disappointing, but ultimately the right call to suspend racing.

“It’s always disappointing whenever we have to suspend or cancel competition, but the safety of competitors, officials, and volunteers is always our first and foremost priority,” he said.

“We were keeping a close eye on the surf throughout the morning’s racing and once conditions started to deteriorate, it left us with no choice.

“You can bet our athletes will be itching to get back into it come the next round of racing.”

Round 4 of SLSQ’s Ocean Roar Series will continue at Rainbow Beach on June 1-2.
