Giants task is too big

- TOM BOSWELL

SOUTHPORT have been dealt their first loss of the season but Sharks football manager Jarrod Fields says the 48point defeat to Greater Western Sydney is only a minor setback amid a successful NEAFL season far.

The reigning premiers were simply outclassed by a GWS side boasting 19 listed AFL players at Giants Stadium yesterday.

“We hung in there and put a reasonable amount of pressure on them but in the end they were just too good,” Fields said.

“We were probably beaten in every facet of the game. Our message to the boys was pretty positive.

“They were a really good side and we hung in there and didn’t get blown out of the water.

“There was a game this time last year where we played Sydney at the SCG and let them kick 10 goals in the last quarter but we stood up (against GWS).

“We were reasonably happy with the effort and we go to Redlands next Sunday and hopefully we can get it back on track. It’s certainly not the end of the world.”

Fields said former North Melbourne AFL player Josh Williams was Southport’s best at halfback, producing his greatest performance of the year against the toughest opponent so far.

“He was probably the shining light,” Field said.

Southport got through the game unscathed and could welcome back defender Ryan Davis and potentially Tom Fields from injury for their Round 8 clash with Redland this Sunday.
