Dolphins take points as Bulls fall at last hurdle

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

IT was another case of close but no cigar for Nerang as their historic Gold Coast District Rugby Union rivalry with Surfers Paradise was reborn.

The Bulls and Dolphins are battling for third and it was the latter who took the points on Saturday in a 26-23 nailbiter.

The loss follows Nerang’s three-point defeat to Helensvale in Round 3 but does again show the top teams are within their reach.

“We just made a few errors and it cost us,” Nerang coach John Maniapoto said.

“They scored two quick tries straight after halftime and that hurt us a bit but we managed to come back. The last five minutes we were sort of looking OK but because we have got a relatively young team, they are still learning to take their options.”

For Surfers, it’s their fourth win by 10 points or less this season as they strengthened their hold on a top-three position ahead of their grand final rematch against Griffith University Colleges.

“If he wasn’t bald, he would be turning grey,” Dolphins skipper Andy Finn said of coach Darren Uys.

In other results, Helensvale edged Bond Pirates 17-12 at Pizzey Park, while Colleges put Gold Coast Eagles to the sword 50-17.
