ARON Sherriff has teamed up with his mother-in-law Liz Walton to win the State Mixed Pairs Championship final at Club Helensvale.

After finishing runners-up last year, the pair defeated Heather Hodgson and Eric Johannes from Paradise Point. Sherriff and Johannes then contested the men’s triples final with Johannes winning.

After trailing 10-15, Johannes with his team of Scott De Jongh and John Bain from Tweed Heads gained the upper hand to lead 22-16 going into the last end. After killing the end three times, Sherriff’s team of Jayden Christie and Nathan Rice held six shots to hold a draw with one bowl of Johannes’ left to play.

An accurate drive cleaned a few shot bowls out to hand Johannes’s team the title.

In the women’s final, defending champions Jessica Srisamruaybai, Claire Turley and Chloe Stewart went out to an early lead over Helensvale locals Jessie Cottell, Natasha Jones and Lynsey Clarke.

They looked to be cruising at 23-10 until the deficit was back to 23-18 with two ends to play. Two shots to Stewart on the second last end secured back-to-back titles for the trio.

In the fours, De Jongh and Johannes, who were teammates in triples, were opponents in the men’s final.

After a slow start De Jongh, Mitchell Mears, Jamie Anderson and Steve Tong finished stronger to win over Chris Le Lievre, Darren Christie, Johannes and Sean Ingham.

After being close early, Jessie Cottell, Karen Goldsworthy, Cassandra and Bolivia Millerick ran away with the women’s fours, defeating Pauline Laverty, Glenys Read, Maree Gibbs and Debbie Logan in the final.

Open and over-60 pairs sectional play began today with post sectional tomorrow and finals on Thursday at Club Helensvale.

Last year’s open women’s champions Srisamruaybai and Stewart will team up again as will men’s champions Jade Groenewege and Sean Baker.

The championships will conclude with the blue-ribbon singles event from Friday to Sunday. Broadbeach’s Bolivia Millerick will be looking to defend her title, with Sunshine Coast’s Jay Dawe trying to defend the men’s.
