Scissor stab attacker goes to jail

- ANNIE PERETS annie.perets@news.com.au

A MAN stabbed a mate with scissors repeatedly at a Gold Coast house party because he was “angry” at something he heard, a court was told.

Charl Bakkes punctured his friend’s hand and thigh with the scissors and also punched the man in the face in January last year.

Bakkes, 50, pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court yesterday to unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Defence barrister James McNab said Bakkes, who migrated from South Africa in 2015, was “angry” about how he believed the victim treated his partner.

“He was fired by his employer following the wounding because of media reports,” Mr McNab said.

“He has put himself at risk of deportation.”

The victim had to go to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which included a deep laceration on the left index finger, the court was told.

The pair befriended each other during a homeless stint and were no longer friends.

Judge Catherine Muir sentenced Bakkes to two years in jail, to be paroled on June 30.
