M1 CLOSED AS UTE HITS BARRIER, CAREERS ACROSS FOUR LANES

- TALISA ELEY tali.eley@news.com.au

THE M1 was brought to a screeching halt after a car crash shut down all northbound lanes for more than an hour yesterday.

Traffic was at a standstill for about 8km from Exit 34 at Beenleigh around the middle of the day as frustrated drivers became trapped in the bumper-to-bumper jam.

Police are still investigating how a ute collided with a guard rail just before noon, flipping across all lanes, spreading debris and blocking traffic.

Crews frantically worked to clear the site so the road could reopen, as police diverted vehicles off the motorway.

The road was reopened about 1.20pm.

The driver, a man aged in his 20s, was able to climb out of the vehicle, which landed on its side.

He was taken to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.
