Membrey hoping Suns will be third time lucky

-

FORMER Collingwood and Brisbane player Jordan Membrey will push her case for a third AFLW coming as she prepares to make a return to the Gold Coast Suns.

Membrey is part of Gold Coast’s 37-player QW Winter Series squad set to play Brisbane three times before a representative team is picked to play Western Australia.

The 23-year-old was delisted by Collingwood at the end of the 2019 season and is understood to be seeking another opportunity to return to the AFLW in 2020.

It’s understood the Coolangatta Tweed QAFLW player will be available for selection for the first QW Winter Series game, to be played this Saturday at Metricon Stadium, before returning to Victoria to play in the VFL.

Membrey’s experience at AFLW level – she played five games for the Lions in 2017 and three for the Magpies – could prove valuable to Gold Coast and Suns AFLW football manager Fiona McLarty said the QW Winter Series game will provide the perfect trial as they look to fill their list.

“Our messaging to her has been what it is to everyone else, to give yourself the best chance with us then the pathway is through our Winter Series program,” McLarty said.

“It’s a chance for the players to play for Lakey (AFLW coach David Lake) and for him to see them first-hand.”

Membrey has been named among the best in each of her five QAFLW games for Coolangatta Tweed this season but McLarty said having the chance to settle in one position has been her greatest hurdle.

“She is a really good person and fits into the culture really well,” McLarty said.

“Part of her problem has been that she keeps getting thrown around in terms of position in every team she plays.”
