Acclaim for free coffees

- EMILY HALLORAN

A GOLD Coast coffee shop owner says he has received more than a thousand positive messages after giving away hundreds of free coffees to women.

Brodie Green, who owns Seadog on James St in Burleigh, gave away more than 560 cups of coffee to women over the weekend and promised to donate profits from men’s purchases to charity.

Mr Green made the gesture after copping negative feedback from a man for a picture he shared online in response to restrictive new abortion laws in Alabama.

“People are coming to (the coffee shop) and every single person is talking about it,” Mr Green said.

“I’ve had people literally crying on my shoulder, thanking me for bringing this to everyone’s attention, and getting people to talk about it.”

The story even grabbed the attention of Australian feminist writer and broadcaster Clementine Ford, who shared the story on her Facebook page last night. “Bloody legend,” she commented. “More men need to speak out against abortion bans and consider their role in opposing them.”

Mr Green raised $1369 from purchases by men and donations at the weekend. He has donated the money to Support The Girls.
