Collins adds to Suns’ injury woes

-

GOLD Coast have suffered another blow to their defensive stocks with fullback Sam Collins set to spend six weeks on the sidelines with a leg injury.

The Suns are already undersized with veteran defender Rory Thompson out for the year with a knee injury.

The Suns play competition leaders Geelong at Metricon Stadium on Saturday and are short on big-bodied defenders to play on Tom Hawkins and Esava Ratugolea. Foundation player Sam Day is the logical replacement but is out of favour with the match committee and if he does not receive the call this week, it is likely his time at the club is over.

Day has so far been overlooked for draftees Ben King and Jack Lukosius and State League top-up players Collins, Josh Corbett and Chris Burgess.

Collins, who played 14 games over two seasons for Fremantle before being delisted at the end of 2017, was given a lifeline by the Suns after a strong season in the VFL for Werribee last year.

He was in the side that lost to Port Adelaide on Sunday but an MRI has revealed a stress reaction in his femur.

Vice-captain Touk Miller is also struggling with the heel injury that kept him from playing against Port and will have to prove his fitness.
