FIREBIRDS LOSE AIKEN TO INJURY

- GREG DAVIS

THE Queensland Firebirds have suffered another injury blow with star goalshooter Romelda Aiken out for the must-win Suncorp Super Netball clash with the Thunderbirds in Adelaide this weekend.

Aiken landed awkwardly hurting her leg during Sunday’s loss to the Giants at the Queensland State Netball Centre but played on.

However, tests revealed she has a bone stress issue with her tibia which will force her out of the match.

The loss of Aiken could not have come at a worse time for the Firebirds who are secondlast on the competition ladder.

Firebirds medical staff will closely monitor how the three-time premiershipwinning Jamaican responds to treatment and will assess her availability for the Round 6 clash with the West Coast Fever on June 1.

The Firebirds will also be without defender Kim Jenner, still recovering from a broken finger that also kept her out of the loss to the Giants. Mackay product Bridey Condren will replace Jenner, while the Firebirds are still deciding on who will fill in for Aiken.
