Meanwhile, users of The Spit are divided on its proposed revamp despite the State Government earmarking $60 million for a masterplan that envisions it becoming like famed Central Park.

Southport’s Jean and Nadia Tadro, who often walk their dog at The Spit, said they would be open to having more amenities and more allocated parkland.

But surfers Alex Cortes, 24, Carlos Tejo, 22, and Ausias Llorca, 23, said any changes to the area would ruin its natural beauty.

“This is probably the wildest part of the Gold Coast, it’s perfect the way it is,” said Mr Cortes.

Destinatio­n Gold Coast CEO Annaliese Battista said the city was “the titan” of the state’s tourism industry but not without challenges. “It’s encouragin­g to see government further investing in fortifying the tourism sector.

“There is huge potential to enhance eco, adventure and cultural tourism. It’s deserving of extra funding … and will add a new layer to our overall offering.”
