Hamish’s one-man TSS show
AN incredible 43-point haul from winger Hamish Roberts has helped keep The Southport School on track for the GPS First XV crown ahead of a potential title showdown.
Roberts was everywhere in Saturday’s 78-0 annihilation of Brisbane Grammar School, bagging four tries, 10 conversions and a penalty goal in the 11-try rout at Village Green.
Runners up to Nudgee College last season, the hosts now have five wins from as many games in 2019 and will face fellow unbeaten side Brisbane Boys’ College on Saturday in what looms as a possible premiership decider.
TSS coach Mike Wallace hailed the Round 5 efforts of Roberts, who was joined on the tryscorers’ list by Ngiyaani Waters, JoJo Fifita (two each), Kaleb Ngamanu, Harry Vousty and captain Zane Nonggorr.
“Hamish finishes well, he’s a very good rugby player. He’s strong in contact and he earned the right to score those tries,” Wallace said.
“We were pretty clinical. That kind of scoreline is not what we go out to achieve – we don’t go out aiming to score 78 points against any opposition – but that’s how it unfolded.
“We had some things that we had to try and improve that we hadn’t been great at during the year. It’s nice that we can set the team those challenges in terms of improvement and (the players) are prepared to go out and meet those challenges.”
After travelling to BBC in Round 6, TSS will face Gregory Terrace (away) and Ipswich Grammar (home) before a bye in the final round on September 14.
