Giants give Greene light to play hard

- — Jon Ritson

AFL: Toby Greene will continue to play on the edge with an aggressive brand of football and Giants coach Leon Cameron expects that to be the norm among his players as he urges them to up the ante in a cutthroat do-or-die semi-final clash with the Brisbane Lions. The polarising Greene was hit with a $7500 fine this week after pleading guilty to a serious misconduct charge arising from last weekend’s elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs. Player and coach have since discussed it but Cameron, while admitting Greene went too far, won’t be asking the 25year-old to tone it down at the Gabba. He also expects him to thrive under the pressure. Indeed, he expects all 22 of the Giants involved against the Lions to be playing the game on the edge, as will the opposition. “We had a really good chat,” Cameron said. “No doubt, Toby put his hand up and he pleaded guilty because he probably went a little bit too far. “He’s copped the fine and moved on. We’re not always going to make the perfect choices. He gets nine things out of 10 right most of the time. “We’re proud of the way he plays and he’ll play an aggressive brand of footy this weekend. “Toby plays on the edge (but) there’s going to be 44 players playing on the edge at the weekend because it’s a cutthroat final. “We’re looking forward to absorbing the pressure that they’re going to throw at us. They’re favourites for a reason, they finished second on the ladder and they’re a bloody good team. We need to bring an enormous amount of intensity at the footy and the man with the footy.”
