Titans to lend hand in bushfire community
THE Gold Coast Titans will show today their support for communities affected by the devastating bushfires, with players and staff to help firefighters and volunteers at the Rural Fire Service base at Canungra Showgrounds.
Players Kevin Proctor and Shannon Boyd will support fire crews and volunteers who have been battling the catastrophic bushfires that have ravaged the Gold Coast and wider southeast Queensland region in recent weeks.
The Titans pair and club staff will be at Canungra Showgrounds to cook a barbecue for firefighters and volunteers, and to deliver charitable donations to members of the community and families that have been affected by the fires.
Proctor (pictured) is keen to pursue a career as a firefighter after football and attended a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services training day in August, along with Titans teammates Will Matthews and Keegan Hipgrave.
The New Zealand international says his admiration is sky high for the people putting their own lives at risk for the good of their community.
“As Gold Coasters, we have all been deeply affected by what we have seen happening with the bushfires and the terrible impact it has been having on the people and businesses in our community,” he said.
“The Titans are a community club and a major part of what we do as an organisation is supporting the community that supports us.”
For Boyd, who lives at Guanaba, the bushfire emergency is close to home and the Titans prop has been helping his community in his own time delivering supplies to residents and firefighters.
“If there is a positive to come out of a bad situation like this, it is that we do get to see the best of our communities as they come together to support each other through the tough times,” Boyd said.
The Canungra visit is part of the broader Titans in the Community day, with 19 Gold Coast NRL players visiting 10 schools and community groups.
