DIDN’T KNEED THAT

Just as PBC think sorry day could not get worse...

- TOM BOSWELL

PALM Beach Currumbin fear their “s*** day” in the QAFL grand final could get even worse, with captain Stephen Thynne (pictured) likely to require heartbreaking knee surgery.

The Lions are sweating on the result of scans on his leg but are already prepared for doctors to confirm it is a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the second quarter of the shock loss to Surfers Paradise on Saturday at Metricon Stadium.

“It’s not looking good,” coach Jess Sinclair said of the 26-year-old.

“We are fearing the worst. He will probably need a knee reconstruction.

“It might be a 5 per cent chance he doesn’t but that’s the likely case.”

Sinclair said it capped off a pretty bad day for the club and while he wasn’t searching for excuses for the defeat, he conceded the loss of Thynne impacted the side.

“I don’t want to make excuses but that killed us,” Sinclair said.

“It threw our rotations out a bit.

“Losing your captain in a grand final is never good.

“I’m not sure when he will be back – maybe mid next year.

“It depends how he goes with his rehab.”

Surfers Paradise had their own battles, with Haydn Kiel dislocating his shoulder in the last term.

Sinclair said he was still coming to terms with losing the premiership decider after dominating the regular season.

“I’m slowly coming out of my dark, black hole,” he said. “I’m pretty numb.

“You would rather lose a grand final by 20 goals than lose by two points.

“It hurts but it’s done now and there is no point dropping the lip.”

Sinclair revealed he spoke little about the actual game to the playing group in the immediate aftermath of the loss.

“There is no point going over isolated incidents and who played well and who didn’t in that situation,” he said.

“I just wanted to say to the collective how proud I was about their year.

“It was a really enjoyable year from my perspective.

“We played really good footy and had our chance to win the grand final as well but when the siren went we were behind.

“Either side could have won it.

“I know they will bounce back. They just need a bit of time off to regroup and I’m sure they will come back ready for the pre-season and ready to get some retribution.”
