MOTHER OF 10’S ‘DATE’ WITH GEORGE CLOONEY
A PIMPAMA mother of 10 has scored a date with one of the hottest celebrities on earth.
And she did by emailing him for a job.
Southern Cross University law graduate Meekehleh Deserio has become a globe-trotting human rights advocate for Alist couple George and Amal Clooney’s Clooney Foundation for Justice.
After finishing her study in June, Ms Deserio emailed the foundation on a whim. Within three days she was on a plane to work for the couple as a court monitor.
“I had always followed what they had done with their advocacy work, so I looked online and applied – I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.
But just days later a surprised and thrilled Ms Deserio found herself travelling internationally.
“With just three days’ notice I was on the plane to another country to attend a court case.
“My role was to keep an eye on due process and ensure it was run fairly from a human rights point of view. It was the best experience ever and I would do it 100 times over.”
Celebrating her graduation from Southern Cross University at the weekend, Ms Deserio said a “burning desire to advocate” was the X-factor that allowed her to navigate the past three-and-a-half years, juggling her roles as a law student, mother, freelance journalist, interior designer and author.
Ms Deserio’s 10 children range in age from nine to 31. She is 50.
Next she hopes to complete a degree in journalism and a graduate diploma in migration law.
“Going back to study was never easy, but I believe anyone can do it if they really want it.”
