STYLE WITH A CAUSE
Students are leading the way in the message of caring for the planet and a fashion show was a good place to make that point
GOLD Coast students took to the runway with their sustainability message at All Saints Anglican School’s Threads Fashion Show.
Several students debuted handmade clothing lines, many giving a nod to important social issues like conservation and recycling.
Among them were Year 12 students Jasmine Searl and Isaac Cullen, who created their collection Culturwear as a statement on consumerism and the modern throwaway society.
Their work earned them an award for Most Innovative Collection.
Isaac said they hoped to create awareness of the need for reusable clothing and avoiding spending excessive amounts on top brands.
“In the future if we want a more sustainable way of life we have to start reusing and recycling our products, so this was one way for us to show how it could be done,” he said.
“We’re both art students so we don’t do home ec, we were the only students in the competition who didn’t.
“Jas made the Aldi bag outfit as part of her body of work for art, and that was the start of it.”
Other items in the collection include a pair of overalls crafted from an Ikea bag and a jacket and skirt set made from Platypus bags.
His fellow designer Jasmine added the collection, inspired by New York designer Nicole McLaughlin, had been getting a lot of attention online.
“We have just recently posted a TikTok video with our models in the outfits which is at 180,000 views,” she said.
“It’s something really special as it is a creative idea that blossomed into three possible festival outfits.”
The Threads Fashion Show invites guests to take a look back at fashion through the years.
Middle and senior school home economics and fashion students, guided by teachers Jill Shehab and Skye Daniels, each created three outfits to send down the catwalk.
Head of senior school Bryn Evans said the 14-year-old event had long been an opportunity for students to get involved in the school community.
“It was a wonderful evening, enjoyed by a capacity audience who witnessed a feast of fashion from Years 9 to 12,” he said.
“The evening was brilliantly emceed by Year 12 students Jacob Hammett and Brooklyn Taylor, and a number of other students did a wonderful job introducing different sections.
“It was wonderful to see so many graduates give up the time to take part and also judge student work. Equally as thrilling was the performance of every student from the models to the designers, the singers, dancers and technical crew.”
