Sculley’s state ambition
NSW product ready to fly flag for adopted home
SHE’S a New South Welshwoman by birth but Hannah Sculley is determined to help Queensland to surf lifesaving interstate championship glory.
With state pride on the line, the titles see lifesavers compete for their states in a range of events on the beach and in the ocean.
NSW has taken out the championships for the past two years just head of the Queensland Cyclones, who
Sculley says are ready to finally flip the tables on their rivals.
“We’ll have a sit-down and talk about what we can do but their girls squad is going to be a very tough challenge,” the Lennox Head product said.
“There’s a NSW Country team now so I would’ve been racing for them if I was still in Lennox Head but I don’t really mind what cap I have on my head because I’ll race my heart out either way. I moved up to Gold Coast a few years ago and joining Northcliffe has been the best decision so I’m pretty happy in Queensland.”
On the back of a hectic summer, which included a best finish of seventh in the final round of the Nutri-Grain series last weekend, Sculley looks set to reignite her rivalry with head NSW coach and North Bondi clubbie Jim Walker. “We had a bit of banter last year,” the 21-year-old said. “He gave me a bit of lip and I called him out as well but then they went on to win.”
The second-year Queensland
Cyclones squad member has also thrown down the gauntlet to teammate Lani Pallister for the swim race.
“She got second in the swim last year and I think only Jackson Borg (NSW) beat her so I’m backing her to smack all the NSW boys in the swim,” Sculley said.
The interstate championships kick off today at Alexandra Headland.
