CALLOUS hoons almost stole a grandmother’s life, but did not stop to help.

Val Lyon watched in horror as a speeding Ford Falcon swerved wildly out of control and crashed only metres in front of her car.

She was 200m from her home on her way to church a short distance away – and as it turned out, just centimetres from death.

A street sign speared into her windscreen, missing her face by centimetres, as the

Falcon overturned and crashed into bushland.

The Southport grandmother, aged in her 80s, had left home about 10am and was on her way to church when she saw ‘hell on wheels’ heading straight for her.

Two youths driving a Ford Falcon XR6 at high speed ran the lights at the intersection of Southport-Nerang Road and Wardoo Street before losing control of the car.

Witnesses said the car rolled more than six times, losing a wheel and damaging every panel on the shell. Police have found the owner of the Falcon and determined he was not driving the car at the time of the high-speed accident.

A number of youths had been interviewed and were believed to be known to the vehicle’s owner, police said. Mrs Lyon escaped the drama with scratches to her arm and bruising.

‘‘I couldn’t believe it when I saw it happen,’’ said Mrs Lyon.

‘‘It (the other car) just rolled and rolled and rolled – I thought, ‘you have got to be joking, this can’t be true’.’’

Her son, who refused to give his name, said that had the street sign speared any closer, his mother would be dead.
