Zorko tells AFLW side ‘aim high’

- GREG DAVIS JESS WUETSCHNER

BRISBANE captain Dayne Zorko says there is nothing stopping the Lions AFLW side from aiming high in 2020.

After qualifying for the first two AFLW deciders, the Lions slid down the ladder with a 2-5 record in 2019 before the playing list was ravaged by expansion clubs.

A new-look side will take on premiers Adelaide at Hickey Park tomorrow and Zorko, who will be part of the television commentary team for the Round 1 clash, said it was a chance to make the competition sit up and take notice.

“Last year probably didn’t go the way they wanted it to but it’s a new season with new opportunities,’’ Zorko said.

“It is a fantastic chance to go out and emulate what they did in the first two seasons.

“It’s a long way to go to the grand final but if they can build on everything they’ve done over the last few years, it will hold them in good stead.

“They have a fantastic coach in Craig Starcevich and a tremendous leadership group who I’ve done a session with and they all know what they are doing.

“If you can build strong relationships and trust each other, anything is possible.’’

Zorko said much like the club’s men’s team in 2019, if the Lions can put together a series of “little wins” throughout games, it could build to something significant.

“If you can keep ticking off those little wins they can turn into big wins,’’ he said.

“As long as the girls just worry about the task at hand, play their role and support each other, they will be heading in the right direction.’’
