MUDGEERABA JUNIORS READY TO SHINE ON BIG STAGE

- ELIZA REILLY

A SLATE of incredible results has the Mudgeeraba Little Athletics club primed to run, jump and throw their way to state glory.

Thirty-one Wallabies have qualified for the Little Athletics state championships, including several under-9 competitors who have excelled this season and grasped the chance to make their titles debut.

While thrilled with the results they have achieved so far this season, centre manager Krysta Bricknell said any club success would be a by-product of their strong culture.

“Our club has performed really well,” she said.

“It’s been one of our more successful seasons for a long time.

“We’re hoping for some more good results and potentially some medals but we’ll be proud of the kids either way.

“All of the athletes who have qualified have been training really hard in the offseason so there’s a lot of athletes who can surprise us.”

Whether or not they skip on to the podium this weekend, Bricknell believes the real marker of success will be Mudgeeraba’s behaviour off the track.

“We’re always focused on being supportive of the kids whether they come first or last,” she said.

“For us, it’s all about sportsmanship and shaking hands at the end of a race rather than coming home with 1000 gold medals.”

The state Little Athletics championships kick off this afternoon at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre in Brisbane and run until Sunday.

Previously athletes have competed on the facility’s training track but this year they will be treated to the added luxury of competing in front of scores of fans inside the fully fledged athletics stadium.
