INSPIRING NEXT CROP OF OUTRIGGING STARS

- AMBER MACPHERSON amber.macpherson@news.com.au

TURNS out a mode of transport that dates back thousands of years is an exciting sport on the Gold Coast – just ask Shania Paine.

The 21-year-old from Nerang is the president of the Gold Coast Outrigger Canoe Club and is inspiring the next generation to find passion for the underrated team sport.

“I’m actively involved with our junior (teams), that’s our next generation coming through,” Ms Paine said.

“We’ve got a really good novice program going, we’ve just started some corporate groups, taking people out and showcasing what our sport is.

“It’s not quite that big in Australia, so we’re trying to get the word out about what outrigger paddling

is.”

Ms Paine is a world canoe champion and was nominated in the Harvey Norman Women of the Year awards for playing an active role in the sporting club. Ms Paine said the Gold Coast was a much more accommodating place for canoeing, with a warmer climate making water sports more inviting.

“I got into the sport through mum and dad, we’re from Tasmania,” she said.

“We love the Gold Coast. I was born up here. I just love being in the sun, we can get on the ocean and in the water all the time – when you’re in Tasmania it’s freezing.

“When you’re out on the water here, it’s a different perspective, it’s just really cool.”

Ms Paine said what she loves most about the sport was being able to compete alongside her family and the camaraderie that spans across rivalries.

“What other sport can you paddle and be as the same team as your family members? I’m on the Gold Coast team with my mum, my dad and my sister,” Ms Paine said.

“It’s just really cool to be able to paddle and share something with your family. It’s just special.

“As much as people are your competitors and we wear different uniforms, everyone’s family and friends. It’s a little community.”
