ENJOY THE SUNSHINE – IT’S NOT GOING TO LAST

- LUKE MORTIMER

BEACHGOERS taking advantage of fine conditions as the Gold Coast heads into winter should make the most of the sunshine before a forecast weekend washout.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) expects showers as the Gold Coast heads towards the weekend, according to meteorologist

Shane Kennedy.

Bond University sport and exercise students – and close friends – Kaelum Barlow, 18, Zoe Rodgers, 20, and Luca Paramon, 19, took to busy Miami Beach to kick a ball around and soak in the sun.

Mr Barlow said the trio and many other students had been hitting the beach regularly after isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s been bloody beautiful, got a good tan, had a good swim,” he said.

“It’s quite busy. Lots of people walking up the beach getting some exercise and sun.

“We’re trying to get to the beach as much as possible. It was very lonely and boring (in isolation).”

Mr Barlow was not looking forward to winter.

“Man, I love the summer love the heat, love the beach,” he said.

“I mean, we’re on the Gold Coast, so it (the sunshine) should stay around for a while, shouldn’t it?”

Temperatures are expected to remain stable with minimums of 14-15C and maximums of 24-25C.

It’s unlikely the Coast will see maximums dip to weekend levels. The Gold Coast Seaway recorded a maximum of 16.6C on Saturday – a May record.

Surfers will be mourning the loss of last week’s big waves, with swell dropping to about a metre.

Water temperatures are expected to be 21-22C and winds will be about 10 knots, potentially increasing into the weekend.
