Roar original takes reins as Brisbane returns to field of play

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

BRISBANE Roar has gone local in choosing a replacement for Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, naming foundation player Warren Moon as the club’s new head coach.

Moon, who enjoyed championship success in the NPL Queensland competition with

Lions FC, returned to the Roar last year as general manager of the club’s academy.

Following Fowler’s decision to quit, Moon joined with assistant coach Darren Davies in taking training sessions before the club’s return match on Sunday against Adelaide at Cbus Super Stadium.

Davies, contracted until the end of next season, will be part of Moon’s coaching staff.

“It’s a great privilege to be appointed as head coach of this great football club,” said Moon, who made 14 appearances for the then Queensland Roar in the 2005-06 season.

“As one of the club’s inaugural players, Brisbane Roar has always meant a great deal to me. There’s plenty to play for this season.”

Roar vice-chairman Chris Fong said Moon was an “advocate for Queensland football”.

“His coaching credentials speak for itself and we believe Warren has the experience and ability to continue building our club to the top of Australian football,” Fong said.

Moon was quick to tap his knowledge of Queensland football in bringing midfield talent Danny Kim to the Roar for the rest of the season.

Kim joins on loan from Lions FC, where he was coached by Moon.

“I’m really grateful to have the chance to prove myself in the A-League,” he said.
