Carty’s Green vets take Gold’s lustre

CRICKET returned in full song to the Gold Coast over the weekend as six Queensland Veterans Cricket sides took the field for a new season.

A Gold Coast Over-60s Division derby at Queens Cricket Club was the headline act.

Pat Carty’s Gold Coast Green outfit triumphed over John Salter’s Gold Coast Gold by three wickets in an exciting chase.

Gold batted first, posting 3/173 with scores of 40, 40 and 37 to Joe Flynn, Steve Janes and skipper Salter respective­ly.

Green’s chase got off to a rocky start with Anthony Carter out lbw in the first over but the side rallied around middle-order rock Derek Delany, whose 40 not out from 21 balls injected life into the chase.

The match went down to the wire with the winning runs hit on the final ball of the 44th over, with Pat Carty’s crew victorious.

Across town, Gold Coast Blue triumphed in its grand final rematch against Redlands/Logan.

An impressive batting display from Blue saw 204 runs tallied for the loss of five wickets.

Opener Roger Boyd topscored with 41, supported ably by No 3 Ian Petherick, who posted 40 before retiring.

Three wickets from Gold Coast’s Queensland representa­tive, David Russell, stymied the Redlands chase, which fell short at 7/189 from 45 overs.

In Over-50s Division II, Gold Coast Green chased down Lockyer’s score of 97 while losing two wickets.

Mark McKenzie and Rob Milde were terrors with the ball, claiming seven wickets for 41 runs to suffocate the visitors. Openers Jamie Hunt and Andrew Ramsey combined for 71 of the 98 required.
