MP: MASKS MISSING IN ACTION
QUICK CHECKPOINT OPEN
THE State Government has loosened border restrictions at one Coolangatta checkpoint, but only to allow emergency and government service workers through.
Paramedics and council workers were seen passing through the checkpoint at the Dixon Street roundabout (pictured) with little scrutiny on Wednesday, a Bulletin photographer at the scene said.
However, pedestrians trying to pass through the blockade were asked for identification by Queensland Police officers.
Police have warned vehicles will be intercepted “at random” at checkpoints and police will verify border declarations with identification.
Anyone providing false information on a declaration of entering Queensland unlawfully can be hit with a $4003 fine.
CURRUMBIN’S new MP has raised concerns frontline workers at the state borders are not being provided with or using appropriate safety equipment such as masks, but authorities say there is plenty available for those who need it.
LNP MP Laura Gerber said some constituents were concerned that police at the border were not being protected by masks or face shields.
However police have rejected the suggestion.
Ms Gerber said: “The Palaszczuk Labor Government needs to explain how it is keeping frontline workers and volunteers safe at our border checkpoints, when they are not wearing face masks.
“Our police are checking documents at the border, in close proximity with members of the public, placing them at risk should interstate travellers exposed to COVID19 present at our borders.”
Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler told the Bulletin any suggestion that police weren’t being provided with PPE was “incorrect”.
“All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) has been made available to all personnel working at police checkpoints,” a police media statement said.
It is understood officers are required to wear masks when they deem it appropriate.
