Suns basking in the glow of record support

- TOM BOSWELL

THE Gold Coast Suns’ week of firsts has continued with the AFL club reaching a membership record of 14,465.

The Suns broke new ground on Thursday by reaching the record total with six weeks still remaining before the membership period closes.

It adds to an incredible run of news from the Suns in a fortnight that has included the resigning of coach Stuart Dew and the club securing a record four Rising Star nominees in the space of seven rounds.

The club also played its first Thursday night prime-time TV game on Thursday night.

The previous membership record of 14,131 was set in the club’s inaugural season in 2011, but was eclipsed this week after the club held a membership drive to hit the milestone.

Suns CEO Mark Evans said it was a tremendous result to see so many people pledge their support to the club in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re incredibly proud to break our club membership record off the back of some outstanding support from the Gold Coast community and beyond,” Evans said.

“2020 has been a challenging year in many respects but to see our long-term, renewing and new members accept the challenge and commit to the club has been really great to see.

“Our supporter base continues to grow with Gold Coast locals getting behind the club because they like what they are seeing on the field from our young and talented team. They can see the future is bright and want to be a part of it.

“I want to thank our members and corporate partners for backing the Suns – they are just so important to this club and we truly appreciate it.”

Evans said the Suns had played a big role in keeping the AFL competition running and continued to make a positive impact in the community.

Memberships are still available for purchase and with the Suns having three games fixtured at Metricon Stadium in the next few rounds there is no better time to sign up.
