DONNA’S BODY POSITIVE TIPS

-

1 Lead by example

Kids are really motivated and make it part of their normal life if parents are eating well and are focused on being strong, fit, healthy and positive themselves. That feeds through to the whole family.

2 Play time

Incorporate some activity that’s enjoyable and positive. Say, “Oh, we’re going to eat Japanese this weekend – let’s research what sort of foods to make”. Go through different cookbooks to make it interesting.

3 Inclusion

Get them involved in the shopping and cooking, or start up their own little vegie garden so they develop an understanding of food.

4 Routine

It always gives children a real sense of security and safety to know their boundaries and to have a routine, to know what’s happening and what’s expected of them. If their parents are seen to be a bit dishevelled and having an issue with getting things done, it’s very stressful for them.

5 Digital discipline

Take them away from hours of sitting in front of digital devices.

6 Weighty matters

Move away from the appearance, and focus on being healthy, strong and fit, and making healthy food choices to help them have more energy. It’s not a good thing to discuss their weight in any way.

7 Holistic health

Confidence, resilience, healthy eating, healthy living, lots of activity – body positivity becomes bound up in that.

If you are at all concerned about your child’s health and wellbeing, see your GP in the first instance and obtain a referral to a paediatrician
