Ricciardo warning to Vettel over F1 future

-

DANIEL Ricciardo has warned Sebastian Vettel he will need a completely new approach to Formula One if he is to see through the challenge of joining a middle order team.

The Ferrari driver – who is yet to secure a seat for 2021 – is in talks with Racing Point (Aston Martin) with whom chasing a finish in the points and maybe a podium would become the new focus as opposed to challenging at the front for wins and world titles.

Switching from a front of the grid team to a middle runner is something of which Ricciardo has first-hand experience. And while the pink cars are certainly punching above their weight this season, the Aussie warned his former Red Bull teammate will need to manage his expectations.

“Seb has pretty much (had) his whole career running at the front,” Ricciardo said.

“Probably every year he’s contested in F1 he’s been on the podium more or less, so if he goes into a midfield team it’s foreign territory for him.

“It requires a bit more of an open mind, certainly some patience.

“But yeah that’s obviously up to him and where he sees the next chapter of his career.

“If he’s still got the will to drive and to compete at the top level, then I 100 per cent think he should continue in the sport.

“If the option is in the midfield somewhere, then it’s normally a longer play.

“So I think he’s going to have to show commitment for not just another 12 months, you’re talking at least 24 months or three years. Twothree years, let’s say that. But that’s something he can answer.

“As a previous teammate, obviously I like Seb, I certainly respect him in the sport and that’s why if he wishes to continue I hope he finds a place where he’s happy.”

The F1 calendar continues this weekend at Silverstone.
