Thompson has a ton of fun in United win

-

GOLD Coast United has maintained its top spot on the Football Queensland National Premier Leagues Women’s ladder with a 2-0 win at home over Mitchelton.

The first “post-corona” competitive hitout for United saw Dee Thompson open the scoring in the first half in her 100th NPLW Queensland appearance.

Rie Kitano doubled the advantage just before halftime with a deft free-kick from the edge of the box.

One of the game’s highlights was a starting debut for 15-year-old goalkeeper Amalia Jobson, who was little troubled between the sticks.

Jobson took her chance with Cassie Zaffina still sidelined from her goalkeeping duties with a hand complaint.

But that didn’t stop Zaffina making a rare “outfield” appearance late in the second half.

Holly Gray, 16, also saw her first competitive minutes off the bench for Gold Coast United in a squad that featured six teenagers.

Gray was subbed on for Eash Norrie, another making her competitive debut for the club.

It was Norrie’s pinpoint pass that set Thompson in behind to score her 106th goal in the competition.

In NPL Queensland men’s action, the Gold Coast Knights shared spoils 2-2 with Easts on their return to the Gold Coast Croatian Sports Centre.

Meanwhile at Coplicks, Gold Coast United drew 1-all with Moreton Bay United on Sunday.

In Brisbane Women’s Premier League news, Coomera made a huge statement with a 9-1 win over Grange Thistle.

The victory on Saturday marked the first time the Colts have played in 2020 following a Round 1 bye and recent washout.

Robina City lost 4-0 to

Annerley.
