NEW FOOTY SHOW
IT’S Queensland rugby league at its best.
Queensland’s premier schoolboy competitions – the Payne Cup in Far North Queensland and the Langer Cup in southeast Queensland – started last week, with hundreds subscribing to watch livestreaming on this and other News Corp Queensland websites. Thousands watched the six games.
Now, to celebrate the interest, we’re launching a weekly highlights show.
The School Footy Show will go live on website
at 7pm on Monday. Hosted by ex-Courier-Mail sports writer turned Gold Coast Bulletin scribe Nic Darveniza and schools league commentator Drury Forbes, School Footy Show will show the highlights and best tries of last week’s round, and look ahead to the key clashes this week.
We’ll beam in experts from North Queensland, have player profiles and key interviews – starting this week with the man who managed to get a competition up this year despite COVID-19 fears.
News’ executive editor digital Bryce Johns said the show was a major step up in coverage of school sport.
‘’The numbers watching last week don’t lie. The Langer and Payne cups have a great following, and this should become schools league central.’’
The show is being shot in the University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield studio and Associate Head of School, Creative Arts Ashley Jones said the students were buzzing at the opportunity.
“This is invaluable realworld experience. Students get to work on a project that supports an important part of our society and work on it in their own high-end TV studio.”
The university’s Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film TV and radio) becomes the Bachelor of TV and Radio Production next year.
Darveniza said the passion of schoolboy league would be on show: “Football at schoolboy level is such a brilliant spectacle, with rivalries, tribalism and atmosphere that can surpass the NRL. These kids play for their mates and love of the game.’’
The School Footy Show will be available on our website from 7pm Monday.
