The Mazda driver has been charged with a number of offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, failure to stop and assist, licence expired, and negligent driving occasioning death.
It’s understood investigators are looking into whether drugs, alcohol and speed played a part in the crash.
In a statement, New South Wales police said the men were taken to hospital for minor injuries.
“The two male occupants of the Mazda 3 left the crash site prior to the arrival of emergency services,” the statement read.
“They were located near the crash site by officers from Tweed/Byron Police District. They were placed under arrest before being taken to Tweed Heads and Gold Coast Hospitals for treatment to non-lifethreatening injuries.
“Officers from the Northern Region Crash Investigation Unit were called and have now commenced investigations.”
It follows a horror year on Gold Coast roads, with the recent deaths of four people on Nerang Murwillumbah Rd at Advancetown, when their car veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a utility. All four died at the scene.
