Deadly mauling by strays

A GOLD COAST pensioner has been “left with nothing” after her best friend, a 14-yearold fox terrier, was violently mauled by a pack of stray dogs in front of her on New Year’s Day.

The 60-year-old Nerang woman, Annette, was collecting the mail with her pet of over a decade Roxy (pictured) at 4.30pm when three roaming dogs came on to her property at Yarrayne Rd.

Two of the animals allegedly turned on the elderly dog fatally crushing her slashing her stomach.

Annette’s daughter Bec Jones, who spoke to the Gold Coast Bulletin on behalf of her devastated mother, said the larger dogs had to be pried off Roxy with a stick.

“There was a little white dog and two brown dogs that came on to the property and attacked,” Ms Jones said.

“They had lock jaw and just wouldn’t let go. Two boys from over the road came to help but Roxy was bleeding everywhere.

“She couldn’t walk properly ribs and and was yelping every time someone tried to pick her up.

“Someone pulled up and called the three dogs into their car – we think it was the owner but they drove away, didn’t offer to standing blood.”

“My mum is just devastated, she is distraught I have never seen her like this in my life,” Ms Jones said.

“She can’t sleep, can’t eat, she is just sobbing and crying. Roxy is all she wants back.

“They were together every day she never went anywhere without Roxy.”

The family, with the help of pet investigator Kirilly Cull, are seeking justice over the attack and are looking for the owner.

Ms Cull said since the incident was made public other Yarrayne Rd residents had contacted them about similar attacks involving dogs of the same description.

The Gold Coast City Council confirmed it was currently investigating the matter but the Bulletin is aware the dogs are still in the possession of their owner.

“The laws need to be addressed so people take responsibility for these violent attacks. An incident like this isn’t blameless,” Ms Cull said.

“Too many animals are wandering the streets and nobody is taking responsibility for them.”
