Thailand pilgrimage on agenda after Baresic does his dad proud

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

HOURS of training every day for two months at his dad’s gym has paid off for Gold Coast Muay Thai fighter Brandon Baresic.

Brandon had his dad, Daniel Baresic, in his corner as he overcame the odds to take home a state title and hand his opponent Abraham Rugato – now 16-1 – his first loss.

The 20-year-old won the vacant WBC welterweight state title in the headline fight on the Destiny Muay

Thai fight night card at Mt Warren Sports Centre on Saturday night.

Brandon’s father described his triumphant son’s opponent as a “tough competitor”.

“He’s an awkward fighter, which can make it hard because you don’t know what to expect,” Daniel said.

“It was a big achievement for Brandon, beating an undefeated opponent.”

Brandon, who trains out of his father’s Fight World gym at Oxenford, pumped his training workload from three hours a day to five in the lead up to the fight.

“Brandon has been working really hard for this fight, training every morning and afternoon,” Daniel said.

“He was training five hours a day for eight weeks leading up to the fight.

“He put a lot into this fight and it was great to see him get rewarded.”

After starting his fighting career when he was 15, Brandon is getting better every year and his dad said a stint in Thailand – the home of Muay Thai – could help him take his fighting to another level.

“Brandon has trained there before but when COVID has passed we’ll look at him spending a year training in Thailand,” Daniel said.

“If he wants to get the most out of his fighting he’ll need to train for six to 12 months in Thailand, which he’ll do when he can travel there again.

“Hopefully he’ll be able to fight for titles in higher divisions soon.”
