TEENS CHARGED OVER CAR CRIME SPREE

- JACOB MILEY

THREE luxury cars were stolen from a Gold Coast property and driven in convoy by a group of teen thieves.

One of the kids is accused of live-streaming the joy ride.

Acting Chief Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said the vehicles – two Mercedes and an Infiniti – were taken from Monaco St, Broadbeach Waters early on Sunday morning.

Police say the vehicles were involved in a number of petrol drive-off offences and the break and enter of a Palm Beach chemist around 4.10am on Sunday.

The three cars were seen by police and members of the public throughout Sunday in convoy, allegedly being driven dangerously and at high speed. Two police helicopters tracked the vehicles.

The Mercedes sedan was seen parking at a restaurant on Days Rd Upper Coomera, where the alleged driver, a 17year-old Upper Coomera boy, was seen to enter a Hyundai van about 4.30pm.

It was tracked to a property nearby on Torrington St where the boy was arrested and charged with unlawful use of motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, burglary, and receiving tainted property and enter premise and commit. He was due to face Southport Children’s Court on Monday.

The stolen Infiniti was located abandoned on Park Ridge Road. The Mercedes SUV remains outstanding.

Chief Supt Sheldon said one child was live-streaming the antics as they drove through Southport.

“It’s a good example of the brazen nature of some of these children and we’ve got to remember these children don’t have a licence. Their experience in driving is nothing more than Grand Theft Auto on the television.”

Three girls and two boys – aged 13 to 16 – have also since been charged with a string of charges including unlawful use of motor vehicle, stealing and traffic and drug offences.

All five children are due to appear in Beenleigh Children’s Court.
