Lions on alert for Crow

- CHRIS HONNERY

THE Lions will be hoping to shut down Adelaide star Erin Phillips early in this weekend’s AFLW grand final at Adelaide Oval, with memories of her Round 4 dominance still fresh in their minds.

The last time the two clubs came together was at Hickey Park this year when Phillips booted four goals to help Adelaide to a 6.9 (45) to 5.3 (33) win.

Now, the Lions are out for vengeance in this weekend’s grand final in the latest instalment of the Brisbane v Adelaide AFLW rivalry.

Brisbane midfielder Ally Anderson said the Lions had to be wary of the lethal Phillips.

“She is always going to perform and she’s such a massive leader in that team,” Anderson said.

“If she does get going, she can lift the whole team up.

“We definitely have to keep an eye on her.

“She’s very strong, athletic and smart so she is difficult to stop but it’s a whole team thing to be able to stop her.”

Brisbane will be boosted by the fact they will be playing in their Indigenous jersey for the grand final.

“I know the girls love the design and love playing in the jersey and it’s pretty special to play in that again for the grand final,” Anderson said.

“We’ve played a few good games in it so hopefully some good luck to come into the grand final.”

Brisbane are expected to name a full-strength side for Saturday’s decider after coming out unscathed from last weekend’s thrilling win over Collingwood in the preliminary final.

Aussie rules fans will have greater access to the VFL than ever this year after a new digital rights deal was signed off.

Kayo Sports, Australia’s leading sport streaming service, will exclusively screen three VFL matches live and on-demand each round as part of a ‘Kayo Freebies’ offering.

The VFL is one of a number of new ‘local sport’ competitions being added to the platform this year, along with the Women’s National Cricket League, the Hockey One competition, the National Junior Basketball Championships and Queensland Rugby League’s Intrust Super Cup.

“We are so excited that VFL footy is back,” AFL head of talent pathways and state league competitions Tristan Salter said.

“We know the legion of supporters are looking forward to the return of the VFL season and there is much for fans to look forward to, whether that be attending matches or watching on Kayo.”
