Football Queensland announces plans for major 2022 restructure

- CALLUM DICK

FOOTBALL Gold Coast chairman Damien Bresic has urged member clubs not to panic as the board meets to discuss how Football Queensland’s proposed reforms will impact the region’s football future.

Bresic and the FGC board convened on Monday night to dissect the 98-page document, made public by FQ last month, which outlined key changes to: governance, administration, competitions and affordability set to be adopted by member organisations and clubs in 2022.

“In a nutshell, Football Queensland is trying to come up with a model that – while not speaking on their behalf – unifies the state so that we produce a product that is consistent across the board,” Bresic said.

In what shapes as the biggest shake-up in Queensland football in more than two decades, with sweeping changes proposed at every level, Bresic stressed there was still plenty of red tape to cut through first.

“The main thing is there’s nothing to worry about at this time. Nothing is being changed just yet,” he said.

“Any of our senior clubs out there that have seen this and are worried about it, don’t need to be. No changes will be made without consulting them first.”

In a statement last month, FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said the push for major reforms, dubbed ‘The Future of Football 2020+’, came after “twelve months of extensive analysis and consultation with our game’s stakeholders”, adding “the Queensland football community has clearly stated that the game needs to evolve and adapt to meet the changing landscape of sport”.

Speaking prior to Monday night’s FGC meeting, Bresic said the board would proceed with a three-step plan that ended with member clubs voting on whether to adopt the proposed reforms or not.

“Step one of the process is us meeting tonight. Step two is getting in a room with Football Queensland to ask questions and provide clarity … step three would be presenting to our clubs and asking for a vote,” Bresic said.

“Our clubs are our members, and since the recommendation paper was released three weeks ago we’ve communicated that with three memos to our clubs.”

Bresic hoped to the process “in month”.

“I want to get this done sooner rather than later so that our clubs know what they’re playing for next year,” he said. complete the next
