Developer snares rare ’60s beachside shack

- VIVA HYDE

ONE of the last original 1960s beach shacks has been snapped up by a developer for $1.7m after hitting the market for the first time in more than 45 years.

The four-bedroom fibro house at 46 Chelsea Ave, Broadbeach was sold prior to auction in a cash unconditional sale.

The unidentified developer laid the successful offer on the eve of the auction, exceeding vendor expectations by about $200,000 and surpassing the highest sales price for a prop607sq

erty on the street, according to CoreLogic records.

The rundown green-andwhite shack is located on a m block which has unlimited height restrictions and zoning for a multi-storey development, according to the listing on realestate.com.au.

It is expected that the house on the prime central Coast site will be demolished to make way for a new development.

Marketing agent Libby Taylor, of Ray White Main Beach, said the property had attracted interest from nostalgic buyers looking to renovate the historic bungalow, located just minutes from Broadbeach’s popular dining and nightlife strip and surf beach.

Ms Taylor said it was an emotional sale for the Brisbane owner, who had held the Coast property for more than 45 years as a holiday retreat for his 10 children and extended family.

The shack’s retro furnishings included coloured vinyl chairs and a vintage kitchen with blue laminate countertops and red tiling.

Property records show the house was built in 1960. The land was valued at $840,000 in June last year.

The street is located off the Gold Coast Hwy with the G:link light rail station nearby.
