Fire fears spark luxury SUV recall

MORE than 17,000 vehicles from BMW’s X5 and X6 ranges have been recalled after the Australian arm of the German luxury car maker flagged concerns of overheating and potential fire.

Consumer watchdog ACCC published a recall notice from BMW Australia Pty Ltd for the BMW E70 X5 and BMW E71 X6 models that were manufactured between January 1, 2007 and August 31, 2010.

The recall of 16,850 affected vehicles came after BMW Australia discovered a plug connection, from the wiring harness to the blower controller, could deteriorate over time.

“This may cause the plug-in contact to short circuit or overheat,” BMW Australia noted in its ACCC product recall.

“If the plug-in contact short circuits or overheats, this may cause a fire. A vehicle fire could increase the risk of an accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

Many of the affected car owners will

be contacted by BMW. However, users are encouraged to contact the carmaker themselves.

“Consumers may contact an authorised BMW service centre or call the BMW Group Customer Interaction Centre on 1800 813 299 to arrange inspection and repair,” the recall stated.

BMW owners are also urged to check their VIN number against BMW’s recalls or technical issue notices online.

“Consumers can go to the BMW Australia website, and using either their vehicle’s VIN or chassis number, check to see if their vehicle has an outstanding technical action or an outstanding safety recall,” the recall statement read.
