Champagne for Anamoe

- MITCH COHEN

STUNNING ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Anamoe will get his chance to make it back-to-back Group 1 victories in next week’s Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Trainer James Cummings confirmed Godolphin’s star two-year-old had pulled up in terrific order from his Randwick triumph last Saturday and it was now full steam ahead to the Champagne.

“He is running in Champagne, take it to bank,” Cummings said.

“He came through Saturday brilliantly, he licked the bin and he was in the tie up stalls moments after the race looking like he had been for a trot and canter.” the the

Cummings had said last Saturday “I can’t see anything that would be around in the next two weeks that’s going to threaten Anamoe in the Champagne” but the stable were reluctant to pull the trigger on a decision on raceday.

The star son of Stress Boss is likely to start deep into the red with bookies in the feature mile.

Anamoe is currently the $1.50 favourite with TAB.com.au for the Champagne Stakes with Sires’ placegetters Hilal ($5) and Captivant ($8) the only other horses in single digits.

A win in the Champagne Stakes could cement Anamoe’s status as the premier twoyear-old of his generation with two Group 1 victories and placings in both the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond.

Meanwhile, Godolphin elected against having a runner in this Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Colette is set to line up in another of the feature events on day two of The Championships at Randwick, the Moet and Chandon Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

The star daughter of Hallowed Crown is an $8 chance for the feature where James McDonald has been booked to ride and will contend with a tricky draw in barrier 12.

Cascadian is likely to line up next week in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes. He is rated an $11 hope for the 1400m event on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival.
