Residents losing out in city’s quest for balance

- SHAUN CUNNEEN, MT NATHAN

ACCORDING to Tom Tate, we are a city that must balance growth with lifestyle (GC Bulletin, April 10).

If he really believes this then why is the Gold Coast the fastest growing city in Australia. Pacific Pines was the fastest growing suburb in Australia, this was followed by Ormeau then Coomera and now the fastest growing suburb in Queensland is Pimpama.

This is not balancing growth with lifestyle, this is bowing to the demands of the big developers.

Tom Tate tries to blame the Queensland government, smoking mirrors as the council is responsible for development approvals, and can refuse to accommodate the state government request, like many councils have in the past.

Noosa council has capped their population, with their mayor saying the plan was modern yet “retaining liveability and the

WHAT nonsense: ‘I’m sick of men whinging’ (GC Bulletin, April 13), the opening words of an article by an admitted feminist, Ann Wason Moore. Playing the game of a closet misandrist?

This feminised regional newspaper in the era of the first downfall of newspapers in our nation’s history, choosing to be gender-specific broaching some gender war ... could well become a new tabloid rendition of women’s weekly.

After all we do have the major advertiser as the Harvey Norman Gold Coast Woman of the Year competition ... and the horde of hopefuls look forward to further editions of ‘Inspire’: a recent liftout self-help insert for female readers.

Undoubtedly, the media has become, for prima donna feminist writers, their Pravda manifesto.

Their artillery in a publication look and feel of Noosa”, but it had to allow for change in the way people lived and worked. Our Mayor has little consideration for the feel of the Coast or the high unemployment created by the overdevelopment of the Gold Coast.

The next trick up Mr Tate’s sleeve is to blame the residents of the Gold Coast for the overdevelopment, suggesting “the City Plan consultation is heavily geared towards a citywide audience, reaching a much larger section of the community”. In other words the people are asking for the increase in population. This is a fallacy, prior to the 2020 council election citywide consultation was obtained, and the city plan developed. Mr Tate fails to mention shortly after the election the plan was upgraded without consultation? Very deceptive and a political stunt.

But Tom Tate is not the only one responsible, each councillor who votes to approve these excessively overdeveloped

that is supposed to be genderneutral and target both genders.

I could dare the editor to publish this comment but I am sure given my previous attempts, she will again reach for the delete button.

Gender equality and the free press? Platitudes.

WARREN JAMES, GOLD COAST estates, or high density buildings is just as guilty.

In the councillors’ wish list, Pimpama’s councillor Mark Hammel wants “highway and intersection upgrades”. Mr Hamel states: “Heavily congested interchanges are causing residents and business owners to sit in traffic for up to 40 minutes to simply cross the M1”. Yet Mr Hammel also wants to develop the cane fields in Jacobs Well. Doing so would double the traffic at junction 49.

Why does the council not adopt one simple policy and put the concerns of the current residents first – this would eliminate so many bad decisions – and we could pay our massive debt in a single term. Stop the developments across the city until the infrastructure is built to accommodate current traffic and increase public transport.

Tom Tate suggests he is unable to stop the speed of the developments on the Gold Coast – then stand aside and let someone who can.

MY mother and father taught me manners, respect for women and how to be a gentleman.

Editorials such as that produced by Ann Wason-Moore shouting ‘Misandry’ from the roof tops does nothing but hamper the cause she purports to support. Respect is a two-way street and is earned, not by who shouts loudest.

PHIL CONNOLLY, GOLD COAST

HOW sad (and disappointing) that Ann Wason-Moore has to see everything through the prism of feminism and equality.

I am more than happy to hold a door open for anybody and reject her suggestion that this is done on the basis of “look at me, look at me”. I was brought up on the basis that good manners and politeness were the basis of a civilised society in the same way that people allow other people to merge onto a

highway, to take a particular car park or to say please and thank you rather than the current tendency to say “I will take one of those”.

Further, as a person of advancing years, I have very much appreciated offers from both young men and women of seats on public transport without ever feeling that they were doing so to achieve recognition for their actions.

BILL TURNER, HOPE ISLAND

CHRISTINE Holgate was given the option to stand aside or go, with even Labor braying for her blood.

She chose to resign and now wants to complain. She made the choice. Live with it and stop blaming others.

ROD WATSON, SURFERS PARADISE

To Palmy Steve and no name 14/04. Missiles on Polair, what a cracker, and yes they should have a Frontend Loader on site to crush the cars in front of all and sundry, then pick them up in them in the jaws of the bucket and straight onto the Tilt Tray for disposal. Get that on Facebook.

Mann’s cartoon on the 14th is spot on. We all know where COVID originated so why try and sugar coat it. China had 12 months to hide evidence before WHO investigators arrived. Mickeyh

Maybe Christine Holgate should have given the 4 employees up to $150,000 each (which they were entitled to) instead of only $20,000 worth of watches. It is much more in line with the LNP bonus system that has handed out millions in bonuses in the last year alone.

Us poor old White Anglo-Saxon Christian Males! Is there anything on this planet that we don’t get blamed for. Apparently we are all racist, mysonigistic, bigoted, greedy, violent, sexist, homophobic, anti-environment individuals who are the cause of all the worlds evils.

What a truly magnanimous gesture from MM not 2 attend Prince Philip’s Funeral. NOT. She was more worried about the backlash from her vicious interview. Jus Sayin

Recently I stood aside to let a lady enter the lift before me. “Thank you. There aren’t many gentlemen left these days.” “They disappeared at the same rate as ladies madam”. There was laughter.

I’m with Pennie , IMAC and Rambo. Why get either of the COVID vaccines here in Australia. I am over 70, but count me out! There is no pandemic in Australia. I have not worn a mask once when out shopping. We have done all the hard work to get to this stage. As long as we keep international borders closed we are safe. Australians wanting to return from overseas were warned over a year ago to get back to Oz, but they chose not to. Their problem! LS

Does the bettingest country in the world really need gambling adverts on TV 24 hours per day, including kids’ prime times? Kids watching sport are learning gambling is a normal part of life, without being informed of the violence, tragedy & poverty it causes. Further, as most agencies are foreign owned, the problems stay here, but the profits go offshore! Ban them from brainwashing our kids, please! Bruce Cramond

In regards to Mayor Tate and his desire to gain the Queen’s attention by requesting permission to create a permanent memorial at Phillip Park... He might want to mention his desire to also construct the Light Rail through our Priority Koala Conservation Area at Burleigh Headland. Then construct the Light

Rail bridge across pristine and award winning Tallebudgera Creek, which will destroy the last ancient Aboriginal Fish Trap on the Gold Coast. Prince Philip, would in no way, want to be associated with a city leader or city that is capable of such an atrocity on our precious coastal environment. Karen Rowles Palmy

Re. Ocean way. Has Waf tried going for a walk along the beach. It is a pleasant experience. Leave the beach as it is. This would keep the beach residents happy and save the GCCC a bucket full of money that they could spend on more essential progects. Inland Residents

How ridiculous is the ex Ceo of Australia Post. Taxpayers fork out $1 to post a simple birthday card & letters that do not even get delivered every day yet management has money laying around to reward themselves luxury gifts ? Is everyone forgetting this company represents Australia’s postal service. Maybe she should have rethinked the cost to the company and the confidence that the public now has in Australia Post’s reasons for increasing postage costs

How is a movie set allowed to be carved out in Springbrook national park? JD potty

Could we please not give Malcolm Turnbull any more time on any media channels – except ABC of course. We don’t need to listen to his silly, toxic- anti-Australia, messages. Time to retire. Stan,GC

Hey Anna W, think of this? It was my mother that taught me to respect women and the strong males who lead by example and instilled the art of being a gentleman. Remember respect isn’t given, it’s earn’t. Men and women live together as a partnership not as an equality contract. EZY E

Not so long ago, before he very most thankfully finally carked it, blokes were wetting their pants in anticipation to pack halls all around Australia to hear what that vicious, very nasty, stand-over murderer, chopper read had to impart (such a low-life doesn’t deserve his name to be capitalised!) Bloody hell! He became a celebrity! Go figure eh? Anyhow – go Schappelle! Who DOES deserve to have her name in capitals!

How does Meghan ever think she would be the focus of attention at the funeral of Prince Philip. At best it shows an over zealous of self importance Doug

Jw,there can’t be price control at supermarkets because in Australia we have a capitalist, free market economy. You need to travel to a socialist paradise like North Korea to see price control in their economy. But they probably don’t have supermarkets. Plenty of nukes, though. Jolly Roger
