THRILLED TO LEAD OUT SHARKS ON HISTORIC DAY

- TOM BOSWELL

RE-APPOINTED Southport Sharks co-captain Andrew Boston has declared he is fit and ready to play in the club’s historic Round 1 Victorian Football League game against Carlton at Ikon Park on Saturday.

Boston has been named to co-captain alongside teammate Seb Tape again for the 2021 season, with Brayden Crossley, Michael Manteit, Billy Gowers, Jacob

Dawson and Tom Fields rounding out the leadership group.

Boston, a former Sharks junior, said it was special to be skipper of the club’s first VFL team.

“It’s a massive achievement for me and Seb Tape,” Boston said.

“We were lucky enough to be captains in the NEAFL side and watch this club grow and win a premiership.

“Now, to continue as captains and go into the VFL is a massive honour. We both love the club with everything we have, so it means everything to us.”

Boston hadn’t played a pre-season game going into last weekend.

The midfielder was due to play Gold Coast, but was forced to withdraw late due to COVID-19 restrictions after working in Brisbane when restrictions were brought in.

It meant Boston played for the Broadbeach Cats in

Round 2 of the QAFL on Saturday and the on-baller was confident he now had enough run in the legs to play in the VFL this weekend.

“I just had to get some running in and get used to playing footy again,” Boston said.

“With all the new rules, it is a fast-paced game.

“We have worked a fair bit on that and I think it’s going to require a lot of fitness and running ability in the VFL.”
