WOLVES RETURN TO THE DEN TO STRIKE

-

KINGSCLIFF Wolves are counting the missed opportunities in last weekend’s clash against Burleigh and will hope to right their wrongs on Friday night.

Returning back home after two away losses, the Wolves host in-form Broadbeach Dolphins at Walter Peate Oval in a late 8.10pm kick-off south of the border in the Gold Coast Premier League.

Wolves coach Ross Fenech (pictured) said his side has let opportunities slip in the last two games.

“We are disappointed at the last two games we have played for sure,” Fenech said.

“The game against Burleigh was completely different to Musgrave as I thought we played well in comparison.”

With his side hitting the post multiple times and forcing big saves from Ryan McCloy in the Burleigh goal, Fenech said that the promising aspect was the fact that the chances fell their way.

“If there is any positives to take out of the game is that we created plenty of opportunities but couldn’t convert. I have full confidence in our team that we will fix that issue and get back to scoring goals like we know we can as a unit,” he said.

The visitors on the other hand have found a new lease of life in 2021 under coach Jamie Thomas. The Dolphins had their worst season last year finishing bottom and avoiding relegation through the play-offs.

Key midfielder and captain Justin Watmough has taken the reigns for his side and showed why he is still one of the best midfielders on the Gold Coast in recent weeks, scoring the winner against Palm Beach and a double last weekend against Musgrave.

Complimenting the midfielder have been the valuable acquisitions of defender Jacob Sjorup, midfielder Diego Cuba and forward Alex Boyce.

As the table tightens from second all the way through to eighth, picking up key points against teams within your vicinity is crucial at this stage of the season.

“The importance of this round in the Premier League could be the difference come the end of the season. If you look at the fixtures, three games stick out as huge points up for grabs,” said Fenech.

At this point time, Nerang Eagles are in the box seat to finish in second spot at the halfway point of the season if all goes to plan for them.

However, nothing can be assumed at this stage of the Premier League if the first seven rounds are anything to go by with plenty of upsets and danger games still in the mix.

In other Premier League fixtures, Saturday’s action sees league leaders Apollo travel to Runaway Bay at 4pm, Musgrave host Southport in the derby at 6pm and Burleigh travel to Palm Beach also at 6pm. The Sunday fixture sees Nerang facing Robina away from home at 3pm.
