A feature writer after decades on the frontline of world sports reporting, his byline signalled a lengthy insight, where he did not copy and paste something from Facebook but sat for hours with his subject and then returned where the words flowed effortlessly like his conversation.

Brian owned the booming voice in the office, the biggest smile, and kept a door open to all. We’ve lost a bright light among an ever-shrinking pool of retired, old-school journos.
