HEADSTART FOR GAMES
AS Australia’s Olympians ramp up their preparations for the Tokyo Games, there’s one star already on the ground who is fully aware of the COVID-19 hurdles her teammates are about to face.
Stacey Porter, a veteran of the Australian softball team, has been warming up for the Games by plying her trade for the SG Holdings Galaxy Stars in the Japanese Softball League since March.
Living in Tokyo for the past three months has been a confronting experience for Porter, dealing with the country’s third state of emergency measures following a recent spike in COVID cases as well as significant backlash from locals who don’t want the Olympics to proceed.
Japan reported more than 6000 new cases in one day this week, with nearly 1000 coming from Tokyo – a jump of more than 300 from the previous week.
