Drug debt leads man to break into father’s dental clinic

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

A GOLD Coast man broke into his father’s dental clinic and stole electronics to repay drug debts.

Hedrus Brits was “frightened” of the man he owed money to, so he broke into his father’s practice.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday to eight charges including enter premises and commit an indictable offence and possessing dangerous drugs.

Brits broke into his father’s Oxenford business on February 27 this year and stole a computer and a socket set from the premises.

He caused about $6500 in damage.

Prosecutor Gavin Reece said a prison sentence should be considered for Brits.

He said Brits’ criminal history should be considered, which included drug offences that dated back to 2013 and a prison term in 2017 for the unlawful use of a vehicle.

Brits’ lawyer Anastasia Stoenko, of Legal Aid Queensland, told the court he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and had an ongoing battle with drugs.

“His drug use started as a teenager,” she said.

“Cannabis helped him feel more relaxed and cope with social situations he struggled in.

“Over time his use increased along with alcoholism too.

“It made him feel less anxious in social settings and he believed it would give him more acceptance from others.”

Ms Stoenko read a letter from Brits’ father describing his son as a “polite and helpful person” with a “gentle nature” when he is not influenced by drugs.

Brits’ father attended court with him.

Magistrate Grace Kahlert sentenced Brits to six months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 18 months. He also received two years probation.
