Concern as GC testing declining

- EMILY TOXWARD

HEALTH authorities are warning Gold Coasters with any Covid symptoms to get tested and then get vaccinated.

“The next three days are crucial; this positive Gold Coast Covid case could be one of many, because no one is getting tested right now,” said Dr Sonu Haikerwal.

She said daily testing at the Upper Coomera Respiratory Clinic had dropped off, with only 10-15 people getting tested.

Vaccination appointments had also tapered off from around 400 to 200 a week

“Usually we get about 30-40 people but it’s like people have just stopped getting tested,” she said.

“We’ve dropped the ball and who knows how many other cases are out there.

“The next three days is so important; maybe our golden window to get everyone vaccinated has already gone now that we have this case.”

GP Lisa Beecham said people needed to get vaccinated immediately.

“Don’t be the one in ICU at Christmas wishing you were vaccinated,” she said.

About 71.4 per cent of eligible Gold Coasters have had their first dose, while 54.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.
